- Beneath the Forth Road Bridge deck there is an existing suspended span under deck access (SSUDA) walkway system which was designed and installed in 1981. It is used for inspection of the suspended span and for carrying out minor remedial works such as painting, replacing bolted connections and maintenance of the deck half joints.The walkways comprise of steel angle and channel sections connected through plated, bolted or welded connections. The walkway mesh is supported on longitudinally spanning angle sections with a maximum span of 3.86m centres between the walkway hangers.The existing system has started to suffer from corrosion and the walkways are under-strength by current standards and is design life expired.The Forth Road Bridge suspended walkway requires removal of the existing steelwork, grit blasting, rehabilitation, galvanising and reinstallation together with strengthening steelwork elements. The refurbishment is required on 5 walkways over an approx. 120m length and includes the installation of new support hangers for temporary staging boards.The works involve the installation of bespoke temporary access system working beneath the Forth Road Bridge and extensive steelwork and painting works.
