Description : With co-funding from the European Regional Development Fund and BEIS, the University of Sheffield is establishing a national Translational Energy Research Centre (TERC) as an integrated multi-technology, pilot-scale R&D platform for low-carbon technologies including hydrogen, bioenergy (BE), and Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS). Site equipment includes a Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell (MCFC) which forms part of a Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage/Utilisation (BECCS) system. The MCFC is a high temperature process capturing CO2 from combustion flues gas with simultaneous power generation. The MCFC utilises 2 sources of flue gas (individually/mixed) which are fed to the cathode side of the MCFC, and which require cleaning and conditioning: 1. Real combustion flue gas, mainly from wood grate boiler, which requires: (1) filtering, and (2) wet/dry scrubbing upstream of the MCFC. 2.
